In his farewell address to Chicago in 2004 Barack Obama tells the audience that his daughter listens to and sings to a rap song called "Drop It Like It's Hot", but, he says, as if it is cute, she mis-pronounces the lyrics to say "Drop It Like A Sock".

What kind of father lets his young daughters listen to these lyrics?  Take a look:

Any doubts about what kind of man lurks beneath that made for TV image they have constructed around him? You know what they say, you can tell more about a man's true character by examining how he behaves when he thinks no one is looking.

Sotomayor Supports Gun Control Despite Heller Decision

Liberty loving Americans celebrated last year when the United States Supreme Court ruled in Heller vs. DC that the Second Amendment guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms was superior to federal, state and local legislation which might infringe upon that right.

"So what", Obama's pick for the Supreme Court seemed to be saying when she signed off on an opinion rendered after the Heller case affirming the right of the state of New York to outlaw possession of certain weapons saying:

“We will uphold legislation if we can identify some reasonably conceived state of facts that could provide a rational basis for the legislative action." [h/t Dave Hatter]

Understandably those with an interest in protecting the constitution from judicial activism are beginning to express significant worries about Obama's nomination.  In the days to come, as more is revealed about Sotomayor, quite frankly, more will be revealed about Obama himself.

Suspicions Continue To Grow That Obama's Closure Of Chrysler Dealers Had A Political Component

There is no need for me to repeat the allegations or the factors which have gone into the conclusions being drawn by many that the closure of Chrysler dealerships correlates directly with political support for republicans, and in some instances, closings have been identified which benefit democratic supporters.

But, if there is any truth to this, the Obama administration has really crossed the line.

Leno Leaves Tonight

Growing up in my house meant that from 11:30 pm until 1 am five nights a week we knew exactly where to find my dad, sitting in front of the television watching Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.  The times I was allowed to join him were some of the best.

I got to see the all time greats like Jackie Gleason, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Jimmy Stewart, George Burns, Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and so many more.

I got to see young comics make their debut, like Richard Pryor, Phyllis Diller, Steve Martin, David Letterman, Freddie Prinze, and Jay Leno.

I had the chance to have seen Steve Allen do the show a few times and to watch Jack Paar  do the show for a while.  But for me, the Tonight Show was all about Johnny Carson.  Of course why wouldn't that be the case?  Allen and Paar combined only did the show for eight years, Carson did it for 30.

When the time came for Johnny to step aside many thought the job would go to David Letterman, or maybe Joan Rivers.  Instead funny man Jay Leno got the nod.

Since 1992 Leno has done a credible job of keeping the show going despite a kind of competition Carson never really had.  Leno was up against Letterman, cable TV, TiVo and a host of other options which peeled away his audience.  Yet his brand of humor was in keeping with the best traditions of the Tonight show.  When it came to politics, current events and hollywood, he was an equal opportunity offender.

His chief competitor, Letterman, has gone the other way.  He has become more overtly liberal.  His humor is now more like ridicule, and more of that is directed at those with whom he disagrees with an arrogance which at some times is hard to take.

Tonight "The Tonight Show" will be Jay's last.  He will pass the baton to Conan O'Brien, the lanky, goof ball with his own show which used to feature "The masturbating bear".  O'Brien's brand of humor must appeal to somebody or NBC wouldn't have given him the most coveted chair in late night television.  Perhaps his appeal is to a younger generation, you know, the ones they say are the big spenders.

Perhaps this show will do well with it's new host.  But I'd say the end result will be more baby boomers going to bed earlier leaving Conan to the kiddies.

I know it is goofy, but there is a bit of history being made tonight.  Good luck Jay, good luck Conan.  Good grief how time has flown.

The Days Of Free News On The Web Going To Stop?

When Rupert Murdoch speaks, people listen. And they read and they watch.  Murdoch is the chairman of News Corp, which owns or holds an ownership interest in a powerful combination of news, entertainment and sports businesses throughout the world.

According to Breitbart.com, Murdoch has offered the opinion that print news is about to be replaced with digital news which will be delivered to a new generation of hand held readers which can provide an entire newspaper, but for a fee.

Discussing the decline in advertising revenue and the current trend to provide access to news for free, Murdoch is reported to have said that this practice is going to have to stop.

The explosion in news related sources on the Internet over the last five years prompted many newspapers to offer access to their main stories and sometimes their entire content to users without charge.  However some papers insisted that readers of more than their headlines buy a subscription.  Acting on their own they ended up finding themselves a shrinking minority.

The interview with Murdoch followed a secret meeting of newspaper executives to discuss their plight.  Watch for a global agreement among them to start charging you, the reader, for  access to their content.

Sarah Nahmens and her mother often discuss personal safety and keep a .32-caliber revolver in their home. "We've always talked about defending yourself and how important that is," Nahmens said.

Police say her planning paid off when two men began forcing her door open. Nahmens quickly retrieved her gun and pointed it at the door as it flew open.

"It kind of kicked in and I thought, 'OK, I've got to make sure that I'm safe' ... It was either going to be me or them and it couldn't be me," she explained. Nahmens fired two shots and the uninjured suspects fled.

"I commend her for protecting herself," said police Capt. Patrick Whitney. Nahmens said the incident has raised awareness in her normally quiet neighborhood. Several women have expressed interest in a "girls day" at the shooting range to practice and learn more about firearms. (Clovis News Journal, Clovis, NM, 02/06/09)
