When Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama many thought of it as a conservative jumping in bed with a liberal. Don't confuse this new love affair with James Carville and Mary Matlin, Powell is much more of a turncoat than most people think.
First, he is decidedly pro-choice and as such was quick to point out how his endorsement was born out of his hope that we would never see another conservative appointed to the Supreme Court.
Powell was also motivated by his own desire to curry favor with the Washington elite, the cuff link dangling wine sipping crowd of pooh poohing sniffers standing around at expensive cocktail parties looking at poor Colin in the corner desperately trying to explain how his service to America was just never fully appreciated by president George W. Bush. Praying for them to sympathize with his plight he saw the opportunity to stay on their guest lists by going public for Obama, once, but not going out on the campaign trail where his motivations would be the subject of daily press scrutiny.
But this move is just like Colin Powell. Send in a bomb from somewhere off shore where you can safely retreat if necessary with no real harm to yourself then show up in your dress uniform for the press conference with a look on your face of having some hurt feelings because nobody thinks you are the most important man in the room.
